Homemade Annabel Karmel cottage pies, £0.35 per portion

Ready for the freezer

I just made a batch of cottage pies from Annabel Karmel’s New Complete Baby & Toddler Meal Planner(p130).

A quick word of love for Annabel Karmel. Her books and recipes are the most sensible, accesible and edible baby recipes I’ve read. There’s a reason why she’s so popular – she seriously knows her stuff. I really get along with her attitude to food – enjoy it, make it easy, the whole family should eat the same thing whenever possible, have some treats but eat healthily most of the time, and don’t get pre-occupied with sterilising and worrying.

I’m not going to breach copyright by sharing the recipe in the book, but you can read loads of her recipes on her website for free (including some other cottage pie recipes), and it is still worthwhile buying the book if you like having a book to look through. It also contains really good advice about weaning.

Mashed potato & carrot topping and minced beef filling

The whole thing cost about £3.50 to make and made one huge one for me, Thrifty Grampy and Thrifty Baby, plus 4 small ones for Thrifty Baby for the freezer. I tripled the quantities and it would make about 10 generous baby-sized portions.
